Old Fashioned Pie Using Sourdough Crust!

Kneaders, have you ever heard of Old Fashioned Pie? Actually, there’s probably several iterations of pies called “Old Fashioned Pie”, but my Grandma’s version was spectacular.
Picture this: rich, smooth, creamy chocolate pudding and gooey, fudgy, chewy brownies have a baby…and that divine chocolatey baby is wrapped in a delicious flaky sourdough pie crust. Um…yes, please!
This pie is not only super easy to make but also quick – especially if your pie crust is already prepared! I like to make 2-4 crusts at a time and freeze them for later!
The steps to Old Fashioned Pie are simple and the results are mind blowing!
This is definitely the kind of pie you can eat all of if you’re not careful. It’s that good. With that said, it’s perfect for sharing with friends & family or bringing to a gathering. That would be the wise choice!
What Ingredients Do I Need?
Part of what makes this pie so good is that it doesn’t require a lot of ingredients. Most of them are pantry staples, especially if you keep baking supplies on hand!

The simple ingredients makes this a go-to pie in my household – I almost always have everything needed to make it at a moments notice! All you need is:
- Unsalted butter*
- Cane sugar
- Unsweetened baking chocolate
- Eggs
- Pinch of salt
- Splash of vanilla extract
All of the ingredients are pretty standard besides the baking chocolate. However, unsweetened chocolate is very easy to find in the baking aisle of any supermarket. It typically comes in a bar form. You want it unsweetened so we can control the amount of sugar.
As for the butter, we want to do the same thing as the chocolate. You want to use unsalted butter and add your own salt.
* If all you have is salted, it isn’t the end of the world. Use what you have. I recommend just omitting the extra pinch of salt and you’re good to go.
How Do I Make It?
Preheat oven to 375F.
Place your prepared pie crust into your pie pan. If using store bought, simply place it into a pie pan (or round pan) and poke a few holes into the crust using a fork.

In a small saucepan on low heat, melt 1/2 cup of butter and 2 oz. of unsweetened chocolate together. Increase the heat to medium and allow mixture to come to a boil. Immediately take off the heat and set aside to cool.

Once the mixture has cooled, add in two beaten eggs, 1 cup of sugar, splash of vanilla extract or paste and a pinch of salt. Omit the salt if you’re using salted butter.

Combine ingredients using a whisk and mix well for 45-60 seconds. This will ensure the ingredients are properly incorporated and also add some air to the batter.

Pour the batter into the pie crust. Bake in preheated oven for approximately 20-25 minutes.

Allow to cool for 10-15 minutes before serving so the inside can set.

How Do I Store It?
If you happen to have leftovers, you may leave it on the counter at room temperature and cover with foil. You can refrigerate it if you need to but it tends to change the texture because moisture is introduced. So, I recommend leaving at room temperature instead. It reheats beautifully in the oven and the microwave!
This is by far one of the most nostalgic and delicious pies for me. I make it often and anyone who tries it asks me for the recipe. I’m a firm believer in sharing recipes and connecting over food; it’s such an inherent bond we all share deep within our collective history.
So, I would love for you to make this. And, when inevitably someone asks for the recipe to this delicious dessert you shared together, go ahead and give it to them. Share the love. Share the food. My grandma would want that <3
